The First Navy Jack was first used in 1775 by Commodore Esek Hopkins during the American Revolutionary War. The flag was designed to signal independence from the British Royal Navy, and featured a rattlesnake on a background of 13 alternating red and white stripes with the motto "Don't Tread on Me". The rattlesnake was a symbol of rebellion against British rule during the American Revolution.
- Since 1980, the First Navy Jack has been used by the active commissioned ship with the longest total period of active service. The current ship to fly the First Navy Jack is the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19).
- The First Navy Jack is also used as a patch on the uniforms of US Army and US Navy members. It is also flown by some citizens to express opposition to government actions, and as a symbol of defiance after terrorist attacks.
